The Red Seal Program (Programme du Sceau rouge) is administered by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). It establishes a national occupational standard for designated trades, allowing certified tradespeople to have their skills recognized across all participating provinces and territories.
For the Industrial Maintenance Mechanic, the trade code is 433A. The Red Seal exam is based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) — a comprehensive national document that defines every task, sub-task, and knowledge requirement for the trade.

Pass a 135-question multiple-choice exam in 4 hours with a minimum score of 70% (95 correct answers).

Register as an Apprentice
Sign up through your provincial apprenticeship authority and find an employer willing to sponsor your apprenticeship.
Complete On-the-Job Training
~7,200–9,000 hours over 4 levels. Each level requires both field hours and in-school technical training.
Pass Each Level Exam
Each apprenticeship level has its own in-school exam. You must pass each to advance to the next level.
Receive Certificate of Apprenticeship
Once all hours and levels are complete, your province issues a Certificate of Apprenticeship — this is what qualifies you to challenge the Red Seal exam.

Apply through your provincial authority to write the 135-question Interprovincial Red Seal exam (70% to pass).
Earn Your Journeyman Certificate of Qualification
Pass the exam and receive your Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) with the Red Seal endorsement — valid in every participating province and territory.
The Red Seal is recognized in all provinces and territories that participate in the Interprovincial Standards Program. Once you hold a Red Seal endorsement, you can work in any of these jurisdictions as a certified Millwright without any additional provincial testing.
The exam is divided into six Major Work Activities (MWAs) based on the RSOS. Questions are weighted by the importance and frequency of each task in the trade.
