The Red Seal Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) exam is the Interprovincial Standards exam administered through the Red Seal Program (Programme du Sceau rouge). It certifies that a millwright has met the national standard of competency across all Canadian provinces and territories.
The exam is divided into six Major Work Activities (MWAs) that reflect every core task a journeyman millwright is expected to perform. Questions are weighted by task importance — meaning power transmission, troubleshooting, and fluid power receive the most questions.
Millwright apprentices who have completed their provincial apprenticeship program and received a Certificate of Apprenticeship.
The Red Seal endorsement lets you work anywhere in Canada without retesting — it's the gold standard of trade certification.
Safety, rigging, mechanical power transmission, fluid power (hydraulics & pneumatics), material handling systems, and preventive maintenance.
Most candidates study 4–12 weeks. Use this guide to identify your MWA weak spots early and focus your effort.
Reading guides is a great start — now test yourself.
Hundreds of Red Seal–style questions across all 6 MWAs, with instant feedback.
Based on the Red Seal Occupational Standard (RSOS) — 135 questions, 4 hours, 70% to pass.

Focus on calculations first
Gear ratios, pulley speeds, and hydraulic force questions appear on every exam. Master the formulas early.
Learn by system, not by topic
Study hydraulics as a full system (reservoir → pump → valve → actuator) rather than memorizing components in isolation.
Understand 'why', not just 'what'
The exam tests applied knowledge. Know why you would choose a tapered roller bearing over a ball bearing, not just what they look like.
Practice under time pressure
135 questions in 4 hours = ~1.8 minutes per question. Do timed practice sets to build pacing confidence.
Prioritize high-weight MWAs
MWA C (Power Transmission, 32q), MWA D (Material Handling, 24q), and MWA E (Fluid Power, 21q) together account for 57% of the exam — study these first.
Reading guides is just the start. Our platform has hundreds of Red Seal–style practice questions with instant feedback, timed exams, and progress tracking.
