Why Safety Is Important for Millwrights

Millwrights work around rotating machinery, heavy loads, stored energy systems, elevated work areas, and hazardous materials. A strong understanding of safety procedures helps prevent injuries, equipment damage, and costly downtime.

Many certification exams include safety-related questions because safe work practices are essential to the trade.

Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)

Lockout/Tagout is the most important safety procedure a millwright performs. It isolates hazardous energy sources before maintenance begins, preventing the leading cause of serious millwright injuries: unexpected equipment startup.

EXAM TIP

LOTO is tested across multiple NOA blocks. Know the sequence and know that verification of de-energization (try-for-dead) is a required step — not optional. One lock, one key, one person — each worker applies their own personal lock.

Hierarchy of Hazard Controls

The hierarchy of controls ranks safety measures from most to least effective. The exam may ask which control is "most effective" or "preferred" — the answer is always elimination or substitution, not PPE.

Elimination

Remove the hazard entirely. Most effective — the hazard no longer exists. Example: physically removing a machine from service.

EXAM TIP

PPE is the least preferred control because it does not remove the hazard — it only protects the worker if everything else fails. The exam will test this ranking.

Stored Energy

Stored energy is energy that remains in a system after equipment has been shut down. Every form must be safely released, blocked, or controlled before maintenance begins — missing any one can cause serious injury.
