Millwright certification in Alberta is managed by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT), a division of Alberta Advanced Education. AIT oversees apprenticeship registration, training standards, and exam authorization for all trades in the province.
Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) is a designated trade in Alberta under trade code 433A. Certification is required to work as a journeyman millwright in the province.
To be eligible to write, you must have completed:
6,240 hours of on-the-job apprenticeship training across four periods
4 periods of technical training (in-school) at an approved institution
A completed and signed apprenticeship record book for all periods
Recommendation from your employer or supervising journeyperson
Your apprenticeship record is managed through the MyTradesecrets portal at tradesecrets.alberta.ca. Verify your recorded hours and training period completions before applying to write.

Apply Through Alberta AIT
Log into your MyTradesecrets account or contact your local Alberta AIT office to apply to write your certification exam. AIT will review your apprenticeship record and confirm your eligibility.
Receive Your Authorization
Once AIT confirms your eligibility, you will receive authorization to schedule your exam. This may come through your MyTradesecrets account or by mail.
Schedule at a Testing Centre
Alberta uses approved testing centres in Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, and other locations. Contact Alberta AIT for the current list.
Exam Day
Bring two pieces of valid government-issued photo ID. Arrive early — late arrivals may not be admitted. The exam is computer-based and you have 4 hours to complete 135 questions.

Alberta's four periods of millwright technical training are delivered at:
NAIT
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology
SAIT
Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
Lakeland College
Lakeland College
Portage College

NAIT and SAIT deliver the majority of Alberta's millwright technical training. If you completed training at either institution, your curriculum will have been aligned with the NOA — the same standard the Red Seal exam is based on.
Oil and Gas Sector Apprentices
Alberta's oil sands and petrochemical environments provide outstanding experience with rotating equipment, pumps, compressors, and high-pressure systems. However, this exposure can be narrow. Budget extra time for fabrication, rigging, and general machinery topics that may not feature heavily in your day-to-day work.
Shutdown and Turnaround Workers
If your apprenticeship was heavily concentrated in turnaround (TA) work, you may have deep experience in specific tasks (heat exchanger work, pump rebuilds, valve maintenance) but less exposure to alignment, installation, and ongoing preventive maintenance. Review Block F thoroughly.
Remote Site Workers
Apprentices who worked at remote oil sands or mining sites may have had limited access to formal training resources. Start your exam prep earlier and consider whether you need additional review of in-school content.
What happens next
Alberta AIT issues your Alberta Journeyman Certificate
The Red Seal endorsement is added, recognizing your certification across Canada
You can work as a certified Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) in any province or territory that recognizes the Red Seal program
Your certificate does not expire.
If you don't achieve 70%:
Alberta AIT provides a performance report by NOA block
A waiting period applies before you can rewrite — contact AIT for current timelines
Use your block results to focus your study on weak areas before rescheduling
