Passive reading feels productive. Research says otherwise. Here's what actually works — and how to build a study approach that gives you the best chance on exam day.
Most millwright apprentices study the same way — grab the in-school notes, read through them, hope it sticks. Then they sit down for the exam and discover that reading about torque calculations is very different from answering a question about them under time pressure.
Passive reading is one of the least effective study methods available. Yet it's what most tradespeople default to — because it feels productive.

Re-reading Notes
Familiarity feels like knowledge, but it isn't. Recognition is not recall. On the exam, you have to retrieve information from memory under pressure — no one hands you the answer.
Highlighting
Highlighting is re-reading with a marker. It creates the illusion of active engagement while producing almost no measurable benefit on exam performance.
Passive Video Watching
Video is useful for understanding concepts, but watching without pausing to test yourself is still passive consumption. It doesn't prepare you to retrieve information under pressure.
Evidence-based methods that build real retention
Active Recall
The most important techniqueForce your brain to retrieve information rather than recognize it. Every time you answer a practice question — right or wrong — you build a stronger memory trace than re-reading the same material ever could.
Spaced Repetition
Fight the forgetting curveReview material at increasing intervals — today, in two days, in a week, in three weeks. Don't cram all your Block C study into one weekend. Return to earlier material periodically.
Interleaving Topics
Mix it up deliberatelyMix topics within a study session instead of finishing one block before starting another. The exam itself is interleaved — questions from all six blocks appear in mixed order. Studying this way prepares you for the real experience.
Timed Mock Exams
Simulate exam conditionsKnowing the material at home is different from retrieving it under time pressure in an unfamiliar testing centre. Aim for two or three full timed sessions before your exam date. Review every wrong answer — not just the score.
Practice questions are your primary study method

Years of hands-on experience gives you genuine context for exam questions. But the exam tests breadth across all six NOA blocks — regardless of what your specific workplace exposed you to.

Your experience tells you what you know well. Your diagnostic practice exam tells you what you don't. Trust the data from your practice results, not your confidence in your day-to-day work.
These are the most common ways prepared candidates leave marks on the table
Studying what you're already good at
Comfort-seeking is natural but counterproductive. The marks you're missing are in your weak blocks, not your strong ones.
Skipping the math
Calculation questions are reliable marks for prepared candidates and reliable losses for unprepared ones. Practice rigging, hydraulics, and gear calculations until the formulas are automatic.
Not simulating exam conditions
Knowing the material in a relaxed environment at home is different from retrieving it under time pressure in an unfamiliar testing centre.
Cramming new material the week before
New material introduced in the final week is unlikely to be retained well enough to help. Focus on consolidating what you already know.
Practice questions as your primary study method — not re-reading
Prioritize your weak blocks — not your comfortable ones
Complete full timed mock exams — not just topic-by-topic review
Space your review over weeks — not concentrated into a final cram
Get enough sleep — especially in the final week
These aren't complicated principles. The challenge is following them consistently when passive reading feels more comfortable.
