Millwright certification in British Columbia is managed by SkilledTradesBC (formerly the Industry Training Authority or ITA). SkilledTradesBC oversees apprenticeship registration, training standards, and certification for all trades in the province.
Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) is a compulsory trade in BC under trade code 433A. You must hold a Certificate of Qualification to work as a millwright in British Columbia.
To be eligible to write, you must have completed:
6,360 hours of on-the-job apprenticeship training across four levels
4 levels of technical training (in-school) at an approved institution
Sign-off from your sponsor employer confirming completion of each apprenticeship level
Registration and active status with SkilledTradesBC throughout your apprenticeship
Your apprenticeship record is managed through your SkilledTradesBC account at skilledtradesbc.ca. Verify your recorded hours and training level completions before applying to write.

Apply Through SkilledTradesBC
Log into your SkilledTradesBC account at skilledtradesbc.ca or contact their offices to apply to write your certification exam. SkilledTradesBC will review your apprenticeship record and confirm your eligibility.
Receive Your Authorization to Test
Once eligibility is confirmed, SkilledTradesBC will authorize you to schedule your exam. You will receive instructions for booking through the approved testing provider.
Schedule at a Testing Centre
BC uses approved testing centres in Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Kelowna, Prince George, Kamloops, Victoria, and other locations. Contact SkilledTradesBC or check their website for the current list.
Exam Day
Bring two pieces of valid government-issued ID — one must be a photo ID. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. The exam is computer-based and you have 4 hours to complete 135 questions.

BCIT delivers a significant portion of BC's millwright technical training and is particularly well regarded in the trade. If you completed training at BCIT, your curriculum will have been aligned with the NOA — the same standard the Red Seal exam is based on.
Pulp and Paper Apprentices
BC's forestry industry employs large numbers of millwrights. Pulp and paper environments provide strong experience in rotating equipment, pumps, conveyors, and steam systems. However, exposure to hydraulics, pneumatics, and alignment may be more limited depending on your specific role. Review Block E and Block F carefully.
Mining Sector Apprentices
BC's interior mining operations offer experience with heavy equipment, crushers, conveyors, and large rotating machinery. Study time should include rigging calculations, bearing fits, and precision alignment — all common exam topics.
LNG and Industrial Apprentices
BC's expanding LNG sector involves high-pressure systems, compressors, and specialized rotating equipment. Exam content covers general millwright knowledge across all sectors, so ensure your study plan addresses areas outside your specific work environment.
Remote and Northern Workers
Apprentices working in northern BC or remote sites may face challenges accessing in-school training. If there have been gaps in your formal training, build extra review time into your exam preparation.
One of the primary benefits of the Red Seal endorsement is interprovincial mobility. A BC-certified millwright with Red Seal endorsement can work as a journeyman in Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and all other Red Seal participating provinces and territories without additional examination.
Given BC's strong millwright wages — particularly in LNG and mining — and Alberta's strong oil sands market, Red Seal certification significantly expands your employment options across western Canada.

Your certificate does not expire and does not require renewal.
If you don't achieve 70%:
SkilledTradesBC provides a performance report by NOA block showing your results in each area
A waiting period applies before you can rewrite — contact SkilledTradesBC for current timelines
Review your block results carefully and focus your study on the areas where you lost the most marks
